Extension Springs

Extension springs are mounted on both sides of the door, running parallel to the horizontal tracks. They stretch and contract to help lift the door. While still common in older installations, they are being replaced by torsion springs in many modern setups.

Extension springs are installed on either side of the garage door, attached between the rear track hangers and a bracket near the front of the horizontal track. They work by stretching (extending) when the door closes, storing energy, and then contracting to help lift the door when it opens.

How they differ from torsion springs: While torsion springs use twisting force, extension springs use stretching force. Extension springs are generally considered less smooth in operation and can wear unevenly if one side stretches more than the other.

Safety cables are critical: Every extension spring system should have safety cables running through the center of each spring. If a spring breaks, the safety cable prevents the spring from flying across the garage at high speed — which can cause serious injury or property damage. If your extension springs do not have safety cables, contact a professional immediately.

Why balancing matters: Extension springs work in pairs — one on each side. If one spring is weaker or a different size than the other, the door will be unbalanced. An unbalanced door puts extreme stress on the opener, tracks, and hardware, leading to premature wear and potential failure.

Key Characteristics

  • Mounted on both sides of the door along the horizontal tracks
  • Uses stretching force to counterbalance the door
  • More common in older installations and single-car garages
  • Requires safety cables to prevent injury if a spring breaks
  • Generally less expensive than torsion springs

When to Choose Extension Springs

  • Replacing existing extension springs in an older system
  • Single-car garage doors with limited headroom above the opening
  • Budget-conscious repairs where the existing track system supports extension springs

Safety Warnings

  • • A broken extension spring without a safety cable can fly across the garage
  • • Never attempt to adjust or replace extension springs yourself
  • • Uneven spring tension can cause the door to twist and come off track
  • • Check that safety cables are installed — if missing, call a professional
