Signs you may need opener installation & repair
- The opener motor hums or runs but the door doesn’t move.
- Remote works from the driveway but not inside the house.
- Door reverses right after touching the floor — sensor or limit issue.
- Photo-eye LEDs blink instead of staying solid; door won’t close.
- Wall button still works but every remote stopped working at the same time.
- Loud grinding or rattle from the opener head — main drive gear is stripped.
- Opener is more than 12–15 years old and lacks battery backup or app control.
What causes this problem?
Most opener calls split into three buckets. The first is alignment and electrical: photo-eye sensors knocked out of line, blown capacitor, dead logic board, broken wall-button wiring. These are the cheap fixes — usually parts under fifty dollars plus labour. The second is mechanical wear inside the opener itself: stripped main drive gears (extremely common on older LiftMaster and Chamberlain chain-drive units), worn trolleys, fatigued belts. We carry the common drive-gear kits on the truck. The third is end-of-life: the motor is fine but the rest of the unit has aged out. Pre-2010 openers run on AC motors, lack rolling-code remote security, can’t support battery backup, and don’t integrate with phone apps. Past twelve to fifteen years we usually recommend replacement instead of pouring repair labour into a unit that doesn’t meet current safety expectations anyway.

What homeowners should know
The two safety systems that matter on every opener are the photo-eye reverse and the auto-reverse on contact. If either is failing, the door can close on a person or pet. We test both at the end of every visit — and so should you, monthly, on whatever opener you have.
Connecticut conditions that affect this service
Winter power outages are the under-appreciated Connecticut factor here. Nor’easters and ice storms knock out residential power for hours or days, and a garage with an older opener and no battery backup means cars stay trapped or families spend ten minutes wrestling the manual release cord in the cold. Modern DC-motor openers with built-in battery backup will give you 20–50 cycles on battery — enough to get out, run errands, and get back.
